BFA (Hons) Programme Revalidation:
Designing a New Curriculum to Enhance Relevance and Align with Industry Development and Needs

The BFA (Hons) in Photographic Digital Art was first offered in September 2013 and it was renamed to BFA (Hons) in Cinematic Design and Photographic Digital Art in September 2014, aimed to extend its profession from photography to cinematography for a better description of the programme content and learning outcomes. Over the 6 years programme has steadily maintained performance.

With the rapid development of digital imaging technology and the intensive demand for more user-friendly devices for photographic imaging manipulation, the term ‘Photography’ is no longer in line with the creative practices of the younger generations. Considering the enrolment figure has been unsatisfactory despite the continuous efforts of the programme team, the programme is required to expand its scope with a new focus. Because of the current programme positioning and recent developments in technology, new content should be introduced to prepare the students for new challenges.

The unique position and distinctive image of each creative arts programme in the department developed a strong synergy. To further our development and to sustain the reputation of our programme with healthy and stable growth, BFA (Hons) in Cinematic Design and Photographic Digital Art should be restructured into BFA (Hons) in Imaging Design and Digital Art. It provides the HKDSE and Associate Degree/Higher Diploma holders with a new spectrum of understanding to explore the changing field of imaging design with the knowledge and perspective gained from digital art aspects. Students could able to exposed to the learning experience to become imaging designers and visual artists with professional knowledge and competency in digital and media art manipulation.

The restructured programme intends to provide students with a broad understanding and training in imaging design through in-depth knowledge and variety in digital art. The programme also equips students with a solid skill in imaging and photographic design and critical approach to evaluate different visual forms as a means to artistic expression under the context of contemporary local and international culture. Through the study, students can acquire competency in imaging design with expertise in conception exploration in artistic creation.

Aims

The IDDA programme aims to provide an articulated ground for imaging design and digital art with visual exploration. Students will gain in-depth knowledge and skills with conceptual frameworks in professional practices and nurtured in an environment that opens to new and creative ideas. This provides the graduates with the competent in manipulating the key focus to shape the fast-changing nature of digital art and contemporary context of visual imaging.

Objectives

Upon completion of the programme of BFAHIDDA, students will be able to:

● Apply digital techniques creatively in the making of new forms of visual imaging and digital art;

● Appraise the aesthetics of images as well as other visual forms and apply the knowledge to visual art criticism;

● Critically Evaluate theories in contemporary approaches to visuals and other forms of analogue or digital imaging and art as a means to artistic expression under the context of contemporary local and international culture;

● Apply concepts, theories, research and perspectives to explore new possibilities in the application and production of creative works.
